Shogi (shō = general, gi = game; in Japanese: 将棋) is a Japanese strategic board game, also referred to as Japanese chess. It is a game from the family that also includes Western chess and Chinese chess. The game has its origins in Japan where it is highly respected. Many professional players can make a living based on spreading and playing the game.
Shogi in its current form was played as early as the 16th century. A direct predecessor without the use of minted pieces can be traced back to 1210 in the historical document Nichūreki, which is an edited copy of Shōchūreki and Kaichūreki from the late Heian period (c. 1120). Over time, many variants have been devised, for example there is a version with 36×36 compartments (Tai Kyoku Shogi), but the 9×9 variant has survived the times best.
